What Hypnosis is and How it Works

How hypnosis works

Ever since I trained as a hypnotherapist back in 2011 I have been fascinated by hypnosis.  I think it was one of the most useful and practical training courses that I have ever undertaken. How about you – do you understand and use self-hypnosis for your own benefit?  In this article I am going to explain my own experience using hypnosis and also introduce a video which explains what hypnosis is and how it works.

Weight loss

I have experienced the magic of hypnosis in my own life.  At one time I struggled with my weight to the point that I had given up in frustration on losing weight.  I simply could not control myself eating and ballooned to 113kgs!  When I undertook training on hypnosis I got my weight down to 86Kgs without much effort.  I actually enjoyed losing weight and lost weight so fast that people thought I was sick!  I felt great about myself and was full of energy and was so happy with my new slim build.

PhD

I also used self -hypnosis to help me attain my PhD in 2012.  Up to that point I had struggled in attaining my PhD.  However hypnosis again saved the day.  I visualised my own graduation day very vividly and captured the scene in vivid detail in a self -hypnosis audio I recorded.  From then on my graduation was inevitable.  When the big day finally came around it was as I had visualised it right down to the sights, sounds and smells.

Challenges to using self-hypnosis

I know what hypnosis is and how it works and I know that it is a very powerful tool for personal growth and change.  However I know that don’t use it enough in my own life.  I often ask myself why I don’t use self-hypnosis more.  I think it is because it takes time and effort to sit down and think about what it is that I actually want, visualise it in detail and then to record my own self-hypnosis audio.  The next challenge is to create the time to listen to the audio daily until the suggestions become absorbed by my sub-conscious mind.  Self-hypnosis is no quick fix.  It takes effort and self-knowledge and in today’s world we all want everything at the click of a button or to pop a pill to solve our problems instantly.  I need to resolve now to create more space in my day for my own self-hypnosis practice.

Learn more about Hypnosis

I hope that I have convinced you just how powerful and useful hypnosis is.  Would you like to learn more about what hypnosis is and how it works?  Please have a look at the above video which is a lecture taken from my course ‘Revinvent yourself – 30 Experiments in Personal Change’.  I hope you find the lecture helpful in explaining hypnosis.  Please feel free to share your comments/questions on the video.

Progress on Learning how to Learn

Learning

Today I am a happy man as I completed the course: “Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects”. The course is offered by McMaster University and the University of California San Diego via the online learning platform Coursera. I have uploaded a copy of my certificate (below).  I have also added the certificate to my LinkedIn profile.

Learn How to Learn

As well as completing all lectures I competed all tests and two assignments and earned an honors grade. This course is the first step on my year of learning. If you have been following this blog you will have seen that I set a process goal to spend an hour a day learning in 2019. I took this course as a first step on my learning journey. The idea is to take time to learn how to learn before starting on learning! The course contains a lot of really powerful material and has excellent reviews.  I have also purchased a copy of the book ‘A Mind for Numbers – How to excel at math and science (even if you flunked algebra).  The book is written by Dr. Barbara Oakley who is one of the course lecturers.  I look forward to reading the book which will refresh the course content in my mind.

Why do I want to learn in 2019?

I set a process goal to learn in 2019 because I want to make learning a key habit of mine going forward.  I am doing this because we all live in a fast changing world.  We live in a time which has been termed the beginning of the 4th Industrial Revolution.   This term was coined by Klaus Schwab founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (check out his book on Amazon).  In the 4th Industrial Revolution we cannot afford to stand still.  We have to keep learning and changing or our skills become obsolete.  The concept of a job for life is dying.  We have to keep growing, changing and re-inventing ourselves.  We must become life-long learners.

What to learn next?

Now that I have completed the ‘Learning How to Learn’ course I have to consider what I will take on next.  The process goal remains the same (one hour per day learning).  I now need to decide what skills I want to build.  I will likely take another MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Coursera or other similar platform.  In the next blog post I will share what I have decided to focus my learning journey on next.

Best wishes,

Tom
